J.R.R. Tolkien’s Magnificent Original Drawings for The Lord of The Rings, The Hobbit and More
From Hobbiton to Helm’s Deep, a remarkable glimpse into Tolkien’s rich universe through original drawings from none other than the master himself
J.R.R. Tolkien is, quite simply, single-handedly responsible for giving us modern fantasy.
From The Hobbit to The Lord of the Rings to The Silmarillion, Tolkien’s work is richly imagined in painstaking detail. Tolkien’s books are remarkable not only for the narrative, but for the accompanying body of work within the nooks and crannies of the Tolkien universe – from intricate maps, illustrations, and even several invented languages, each with their own sets of grammar rules and vocabulary.
Nowhere is the stunning expanse of his imagination more clearly demonstrated than in the book Pictures by J.R.R. Tolkien. The book is an assorted collection of Tolkien’s drawings, some previously published and some unpublished. From Hobbiton to Helm’s Deep, the drawings are a remarkable glimpse into the window of Tolkien’s rich imaginary canvas.

Love this, it is so beautiful and intricate
Isn’t it? Thanks, Trishna!
Very interesting to see all the various artistic styles from the same person. I can see hints of Blake, some Impressionism, and even a similarity with some Tiffany stained glass in the Bilbo comes to the Huts… fascinating!
TLOTR Movie franchise has taken good care to represent these places as they are in the drawings 🙂
